The Best Juneau Shore Excursion

Juneau is a beautiful small city set on a salt water channel and surrounded by magnificent alpine peaks. The capitol of Alaska, Juneau is a nature lover’s paradise, with great shops, restaurants, and the only glacier within the municipal limits of any city.

The one Juneau shore excursion you really shouldn’t miss is the glacier-top dog sled adventure. What trip to Alaska would be complete without a dog sled ride? Of course, your Alaska cruise will take place in the summer (or late spring), so you will find most areas snow-free and in their lush, green summer state.

However atop one of the area’s massive rivers of ice known as tidewater glaciers, it is always winter. The Best Skagway Shore Excursion

The port of Skagway is the northernmost in the Inside Passage. Located at the end of a long, beautiful fjord, Skagway has a rich gold rush history which lives on in its historic buildings and museums.

As with Ketchikan and Juneau, there is much to see within walking distance of the cruise ship docks in Skagway, including the wonderful small shops, museums, and restaurants of the main street.

The best Skagway shore excursion is the Glacier Point Wilderness Safari. The adventure starts with a 45 minute catamaran ride along Alaska’s deepest fjord to Glacier Point, where you will land on a beach, where a bus awaits to take you to a trailhead for a short walk to an overlook with an absolutely stunning view of the glacier.

From there, you will head to a landing, where you will board long canoes for a paddle past massive icebergs, along the base of the huge glacier. This is a simply incredible experience that you just can’t miss.

So those are the three best Alaska cruise shore excursions. Each is an exciting, once in a lifetime experience. If you manage to fit all three into your cruise itinerary, you will have an amazing, memorable, and downright fun trip. In fact, it could even be your favorite vacation ever.

Then, when you arrive at Orcas Beach, you will head off on a hike through the rainforest, which is simply beautiful. This trip is one of the best ways to experience the coast, forest, and wildlife of Southern Alaska up close.

3. Half Day Salmon Fishing Excursion

Ketchikan is famous for its salmon fishing, and this excursion allows you to fit in an actual salmon fishing trip during your cruise. Any salmon you catch can be shipped home for you. The Top 10 Myths About Alaskan Cruises

There are certainly quite a few myths out there about Alaskan cruises, and during my time working in the travel industry, I heard all of them. So in order to set the record straight, I have put together this list of the top 10 myths about Alaskan cruises.

When you take an Alaskan cruise, the experience is unforgettable – the shore trips range from fascinating to thrilling, the towns along the route are wonderfully quaint, and the scenery is simply spectacular. As far as I am concerned, it is the most amazing scenery anywhere in the world.

An Alaska vacation is one you will remember for the rest of your life. Alaska will, no doubt, defy many of your preconceived notions. It is a place that exceeds all expectations.

So without further ado, let’s move right to the myth busting.

1. You’ll see the Aurora Borealis

There is a chance that you could catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) at some point along your cruise, but the odds are definitely against it. You can increase your chances of witnessing the Northern Lights by including an inland tour that stops in Fairbanks or by scheduling your cruise at the very beginning or end of the season.

2. The weather in September and May is too cold

The Inside Passage actually has a relatively mild and moderate marine climate, more like that of Seattle than of northern Alaska. The temperature along the Inside Passage only varies about ten degrees from the coolest part of the cruise season in May and late September to the warmest time of the summer, when it can get up to the high 60′s.

3. Passports are not needed for an Alaska cruise

As of 2009, passports will be required for all passengers on Alaskan cruises. In fact, anyone who flies in or out of Vancouver from the U.S. has been required to have a passport for a number of years. So do yourself a favor and get your passport early.

4. It rains constantly

It definitely does rain quite a bit in southern coastal Alaska. In fact, without the rain, there would be no lush rainforest vegetation or breathtaking waterfalls and glaciers. But still, it is very likely you will experience a mix of rain and sunshine during your cruise.

5. It is always less expensive if you cruise from Seattle

It is definitely often less expensive to fly to Seattle than it is to fly to Anchorage or Vancouver. However, the money you save on flights can be eaten up by higher cruise fares, since sailings from Seattle often cost a bit more.

6. The front section of the boat is better for those with motion sickness

Neither the bow (front section) nor the top floors of the ship are your best bet if you suffer from sea sickness. Instead, people who are concerned about sea sickness might want to consider booking cabins on the lower floors of the ship, where there is less motion.

7. It is possible to make cell phone calls on an Alaska cruise

It’s true that you should be able to use your cell phone in some of the port towns (especially in Juneau). However, there is little chance your phone will get a signal in some of the more remote segments of the cruise.

8. The left (or right) side of the ship is better

Many people planning Alaska cruises seem to be under the impression that the right side of the boat is far better on a northbound Gulf of Alaska cruise (and that the left side is superior on a southbound cruise). There is indeed a period of about 1-2 days when your ship is out at sea in the Gulf of Alaska (assuming you have booked a one-way cruise). On those days, if the coastline is not shrouded in clouds (as it frequently is), you would have a better view from the rooms facing the coast. But for the remainder of the cruise, the views from both sides of the ship are often equally wonderful.

9. You can save big bucks by booking last minute

Through those buying last-minute might get great deals on cruises of the Caribbean, the same does not really hold true for Alaska cruises. Alaskan ships often sell out far in advance for cruises in the months of July and August. If you are really looking for a last-second deal, you might be able to find one in May or September, though you could have to settle for an inside cabin.

10. You can see polar bears on the cruise

While there are many incredible sights that you will see on an Inside Passage or Gulf of Alaska cruise, you won’t see any Polar bears. These massive bears live almost exclusively on arctic ice flows in the far northern region of Alaska. The cruise route focuses on southern and central Alaska. However, you might well see grizzly bears on your cruise, for they are very common in lower Alaska and are an incredible sight.

How do I go about getting a job working on an Alaskan fishing boat?

I would like to work on an Alaskan fishing boat but don’t know how to go about getting into the business. I’m a hard worker and have worked in an industry where i was on call 24hrs a day for 6-7 days a week for the past 7 years. I would like to know if there is a way to get information or contacts to get into the commercial fishing industry in Alaska.
The 24hr 6 day a week job i was speaking of was working in the towing industry in the Mojave desert. There aren’t a lot of people that can work 36 hrs straight in temperatures that hit 125 F + every summer. It’s not so much that as it is that I have a lot of heart. I don’t want to do this for the money(i would be lying if i said that the money wouldn’t be nice) but I want to do it to challenge myself. To be able to step off of one of those boats and say that I did something that not many people can do or would even try to do. I have always pushed myself and this seems like a good opportunity.

I recently read an article about how people spend more time planning their vacations than they do planning their lives. I am sure this is probably true for many. And although, I encourage you to spend some time planning your life, I also encourage you to research Alaska before you finalize your cruise ship plans. This way you can plan your time and itinerary to take advantage of all that Alaska has to offer for you.

Here are my 7 favorite tips:

1. Gather ideas on what you want to see and do in Alaska

Before you make your plans, read up on Alaska and research the most important things you want to see and do. This is a critical element, and will make planning the rest of your trip much easier. Alaska is so vast and filled with opportunities it is very important to familiarize yourself with the possibilities and then narrow them down – BEFORE YOU GO!

2. Decide on the Ports-of-Call that are most important to you

The typical ports where the cruise ships dock are: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. However these three stops are not always the only stops available. Other ports include Prince Rupert, Hoonah (Icy Straits), Sitka, Wrangell, Haines, Valdez, Seward & Whittier. Every port has its own heritage, charm and shore excursions. Once you have a clear picture of which towns you want on your itinerary, then narrowing down the right cruise becomes a clear choice.

3. Check for the amount of time you will have in each port

You would be amazed at how many times people want to schedule a certain tour in a particular port only to be disappointed that there is either not enough time for the tour they wanted ~ or not enough time for the two tours they had their hearts set on. 4. Book your shore excursions in advance

It used to be that you could book tours when you arrive in port. After 9/11 the regulations are more strict with tour operators being able to sell at the port. Many do not allow it at all. My answer to this is always – book in advance – know what you are doing before you go. Many of the most popular tours are booked way in advance. These are ones such as flightseeing, helicopter tours, dog sledding, rafting, kayaking, whale watching, fishing. Although there may be exceptions, you really don’t want to spend your precious time in port running around trying to find a tour. Nor do you want to be disappointed when you can’t get on the one you wanted. When you plan in advance you aren’t rushed, you know what you are doing and in the long run you have more time to “vacation”.

5. Learn about the history of Alaska

Read all you can about Alaska. It’s history is captivating. Each town has its own heritage and story. The more you learn the more fascinated you will become.

6. Know the best time of year to visit

I’m continually asked questions about the best time of year to visit Alaska. The answer to this is totally subjective and depends on your priorities. If it’s wildlife you want to see, then make sure you know the optimum time for viewing the species you are looking for. If you want the best weather – then probably don’t risk a late August or September trip. What about the best fishing – well, what do you want to catch and where are you going to be? You see, there are lots of reasons to pick certain months. The best time to come to Alaska is when you and your family can take time off of work and see this majestic state.

7. Ask Questions!

It is so important to ask questions of people who know Alaska and the ports where you will be visiting. The big thing to remember is that other people’s views are extremely subjective. One person’s dream tour could be another one’s nightmare. I’ve talked to 2 families who have done exactly the same tour at the same time and one thought it was the best trip in Alaska and the other complained because it was not what they expected. Make sure you ask the right questions and ask someone who can give you straight answers.

I've sailed with NCL (Norweigan) and it was fine. I just want to get some recommendations or suggestions on which cruise lines you guys like and don't like. Thanks so much.
We wanted to find out personal experiences on different cruise lines and why you like some more than others. The age group of people cruising are from 29-75. We don't really want a party ship or alot of kids. (preferably). Suggestions greatly appreciated.
