Renting A Car To Get To Cruise?

We are setting sail with Carnival Cruise Lines from Miami September 24, but the 23rd we are flying in to Fort Lauderdale. It was cheaper for us to fly into FLL.
Carnival wants 0 for my husband and I to transport us to and from Miami.
Someone suggested renting a car.
