Can bottom paint be removed on my boat?

I bought a used boat with bottom paint. Its a mess, and would like to remove it all together, but would this be nearly impossible or very expensive? Bottom paint is over 0 a gallon so I am trying to avoid having to buy replacement paint. A side note, we will not be keeping the boat in the water for storage.

  1. Caretaker Says:

Accumulation of paint on older boats and cars, often hides surface imperfections. Sometimes stripping uncovers unexpected surprises.
If the bottom is sound I would suggest you just prepare and prime the surface so you can paint it with the color and paint of your choice.

As to the final effect. Gloss is for appearance. Rough is for speed and efficiency because the surface boundary layer produces lower friction. (Similar to how dimples on a golf ball improve aerodynamics.)

  2. Jay Tanner Says:

You can scuff sand the surface and use a bottom paint primer (like Sea Hawk sHawkocon) and then paint it with bottom paint.

If you have years and years of bottom paint then you can remove it with a marine paint stripper.
