Ok here is how it works. When you board the ship you will go to the Information desk to set up your Sail and sign account. You can start the account with cash, credit or debit card. THe least amount of money you should have on your card is the amount for tips. With Carnival the tips are $10 per day per guest, but you can talk to your travel agent and prepay your tips so that would be one less thing to worry about.

With your sail and sign card you can put any amount of money you want on it. So whenever you purchase anything on the ship they will charge that card. Such charges could include drinks at bar, spa services, goods from the many stores or even for paying for your excursions tours.

If you choose to put cash on your card and you go over the amount that had on it then at the end of the cruise you will receive a bill for the balance that you owe carnival.

If you choose to use a debit card then Carnival holds all the money in the account. I use to work for them so I can swear by this. For example if you have bills that are automatically deducted from your account while you are on the cruise those bills could bounce. Its best to use either cash or a credit card.
